mm: introduce memdesc_flags_t
Patch series "Add and use memdesc_flags_t". At some point struct page will be separated from struct slab and struct folio. This is a step towards that by introducing a type for the 'flags' word of all three structures. This gives us a certain amount of type safety by establishing that some of these unsigned longs are different from other unsigned longs in that they contain things like node ID, section number and zone number in the upper bits. That lets us have functions that can be easily called by anyone who has a slab, folio or page (but not easily by anyone else) to get the node or zone. There's going to be some unusual merge problems with this as some odd bits of the kernel decide they want to print out the flags value or something similar by writing page->flags and now they'll need to write page->flags.f instead. That's most of the churn here. Maybe we should be removing these things from the debug output? This patch (of 11): Wrap the unsigned long flags in a typedef. In upcoming patches, this will provide a strong hint that you can't just pass a random unsigned long to functions which take this as an argument. openrisc: Add text patching API support
Add text patching api's to use in subsequent jump_label implementation. We use a new fixmap FIX_TEXT_POKE0 entry to temporarily override MMU mappings to allow read only text pages to be written to. Previously, __set_fix was marked with __init as it was only used during the EARLYCON stage. Now that TEXT_POKE mappings require post-init usage (e.g., FIX_TEXT_POKE0), keeping __init would cause runtime bugs whenset_fixmap accesses invalid memory. Thus, we remove the __init flag to ensure __set_fix remains valid beyond initialization. A new function patch_insn_write is exposed to allow single instruction patching. openrisc: Add __attribute_const__ to ffs()-family implementations
While tracking down a problem where constant expressions used by BUILD_BUG_ON() suddenly stopped working[1], we found that an added static initializer was convincing the compiler that it couldn't track the state of the prior statically initialized value. Tracing this down found that ffs() was used in the initializer macro, but since it wasn't marked with __attribute__const__, the compiler had to assume the function might change variable states as a side-effect (which is not true for ffs(), which provides deterministic math results). Add missing __attribute_const__ annotations to OpenRISC's implementations of ffs(), __ffs(), fls(), and __fls() functions. These are pure mathematical functions that always return the same result for the same input with no side effects, making them eligible for compiler optimization. While the GCC and Clang compilers already define __ASSEMBLER__ automatically when compiling assembly code, __ASSEMBLY__ is a macro that only gets defined by the Makefiles in the kernel. This can be very confusing when switching between userspace and kernelspace coding, or when dealing with uapi headers that rather should use __ASSEMBLER__ instead. According to the OpenRISC architecture manual, the dcache and icache may not be present. When these caches are present, the invalidate and flush registers may be absent. The current implementation does not perform checks to verify their presence before utilizing cache registers, or invalidating and flushing cache blocks. Introduce new functions to detect the presence of cache components and related special-purpose registers. There are a few places where a range of addresses have to be flushed or invalidated and the implementation is duplicated. Introduce new utility functions and macros that generalize this implementation and reduce duplication. The "cpuinfo_or1k" structure currently has identical data members for different cache components. Remove these fields out of struct cpuinfo_or1k and into its own struct. mm: pgtable: convert some architectures to use tlb_remove_ptdesc()
Now, the nine architectures of csky, hexagon, loongarch, m68k, mips,
nios2, openrisc, sh and um do not select CONFIG_MMU_GATHER_RCU_TABLE_FREE,
and just call pagetable_dtor() + tlb_remove_page_ptdesc() (the wrapper of
tlb_remove_page()). This is the same as the implementation of
tlb_remove_{ptdesc|table}() under !CONFIG_MMU_GATHER_TABLE_FREE, so
convert these architectures to use tlb_remove_ptdesc().
The ultimate goal is to make the architecture only use tlb_remove_ptdesc()
or tlb_remove_table() for page table pages.

page allocator so we end up with the ability to allocate and free
zero-refcount pages. So that callers (ie, slab) can avoid a refcount

asm-generic: pgalloc: provide generic __pgd_{alloc,free}
We already have a generic implementation of alloc/free up to P4D level, as
well as pgd_free(). Let's finish the work and add a generic PGD-level
alloc helper as well.
Unlike at lower levels, almost all architectures need some specific magic
at PGD level (typically initialising PGD entries), so introducing a
generic pgd_alloc() isn't worth it. Instead we introduce two new helpers,
__pgd_alloc() and __pgd_free(), and make use of them in the arch-specific
pgd_alloc() and pgd_free() wherever possible. To accommodate as many arch
as possible, __pgd_alloc() takes a page allocation order.
Because pagetable_alloc() allocates zeroed pages, explicit zeroing in
pgd_alloc() becomes redundant and we can get rid of it. Some trivial
implementations of pgd_free() also become unnecessary once __pgd_alloc()
is used; remove them.
Another small improvement is consistent accounting of PGD pages by using
GFP_PGTABLE_{USER,KERNEL} as appropriate.
Not all PGD allocations can be handled by the generic helpers. In
particular, multiple architectures allocate PGDs from a kmem_cache, and
those PGDs may not be page-sized.

mm: pgtable: introduce pagetable_dtor()
The pagetable_p*_dtor() are exactly the same except for the handling of ptlock. If we make ptlock_free() handle the case where ptdesc->ptl is NULL and remove VM_BUG_ON_PAGE() from pmd_ptlock_free(), we can unify pagetable_p*_dtor() into one function. Let's introduce pagetable_dtor() to do this. Later, pagetable_dtor() will be moved to tlb_remove_ptdesc(), so that ptlock and page table pages can be freed together (regardless of whether RCU is used). This prevents the use-after-free problem where the ptlock is freed immediately but the page table pages is freed later via RCU. asm-generic: provide generic page_to_phys and phys_to_page implementations
page_to_phys is duplicated by all architectures, and from some strange reason placed in <asm/io.h> where it doesn't fit at all. phys_to_page is only provided by a few architectures despite having a lot of open coded users. Provide generic versions in <asm-generic/memory_model.h> to make these helpers more easily usable. Note with this patch powerpc loses the CONFIG_DEBUG_VIRTUAL pfn_valid check. With commit 53c98e35dcbc ("openrisc: mm: remove unneeded early ioremap
code") it was commented that early ioremap was not used in OpenRISC. I
acked this but was wrong, earlycon was using it. Earlycon setup now

To fix this we could either implement early_ioremap again or implement
fixmap. In this patch we choose the later option of implementing basic
fixmap support.
While fixing this we also remove the old FIX_IOREMAP slots that were
used by early ioremap code. That code was also removed by commit
53c98e35dcbc ("openrisc: mm: remove unneeded early ioremap code") but
these definitions were not cleaned up.

openrisc: convert to generic syscall table
The uapi/asm/unistd_32.h and asm/syscall_table_32.h headers can now be generated from scripts/syscall.tbl, which makes this consistent with the other architectures that have their own syscall.tbl. openrisc has one extra system call that gets added to scripts/syscall.tbl. The time32, stat64, rlimit and renameat entries in the syscall_abis_32 line are for system calls that were part of the generic ABI when arch/nios2 got added but are no longer enabled by default for new architectures. Both the user visible side of asm/unistd.h and the internal syscall table in the kernel should have the same effective contents after this. When asm/syscalls.h is included in kernel/fork.c for the purpose of type checking, the redirection macros cause problems. Move these so only the references get redirected. clone3: drop __ARCH_WANT_SYS_CLONE3 macro
When clone3() was introduced, it was not obvious how each architecture deals with setting up the stack and keeping the register contents in a fork()-like system call, so this was left for the architecture maintainers to implement, with __ARCH_WANT_SYS_CLONE3 defined by those that already implement it. Five years later, we still have a few architectures left that are missing clone3(), and the macro keeps getting in the way as it's fundamentally different from all the other __ARCH_WANT_SYS_* macros that are meant to provide backwards-compatibility with applications using older syscalls that are no longer provided by default. Address this by reversing the polarity of the macro, adding an __ARCH_BROKEN_SYS_CLONE3 macro to all architectures that don't already provide the syscall, and remove __ARCH_WANT_SYS_CLONE3 from all the other ones. openrisc: Move FPU state out of pt_regs
My original, naive, FPU support patch had the FPCSR register stored during both the *mode switch* and *context switch*. This is wasteful. Also, the original patches did not save the FPU state when handling signals during the system call fast path. We fix this by moving the FPCSR state to thread_struct in task_struct. We also introduce new helper functions save_fpu and restore_fpu which can be used to sync the FPU with thread_struct. These functions are now called when needed: - Setting up and restoring sigcontext when handling signals - Before and after __switch_to during context switches - When handling FPU exceptions - When reading and writing FPU register sets In the future we can further optimize this by doing lazy FPU save and restore. For example, FPU sync is not needed when switching to and from kernel threads (x86 does this). FPU save and restore does not need to be done two times if we have both rescheduling and signal work to do. This defines the current OpenRISC relocation types using the current R_OR1K_* naming conventions. The old R_OR32_* definitions are left for backwards compatibility. Note, the R_OR32_VTENTRY and R_OR32_VTINHERIT macros were defined with the wrong values the have always been 7 and 8 respectively, not 8 and 7. mm: Remove broken pfn_to_virt() on arch csky/hexagon/openrisc
Remove the broken pfn_to_virt() on architectures csky/hexagon/openrisc. The pfn_to_virt() on those architectures takes PFN instead of PA as the input to macro __va(), with PAGE_SHIFT applying to the converted VA, which is not right, especially when there's a non-zero offset in __va(). [1] The broken pfn_to_virt() was noticed when checking how page_to_virt() is unfolded on x86. It turns out that the one in linux/mm.h instead of in asm-generic/page.h is compiled for x86. By taking GENERIC_IOREMAP method, the generic generic_ioremap_prot(), generic_iounmap(), and their generic wrapper ioremap_prot(), ioremap() and iounmap() are all visible and available to arch. Arch needs to provide wrapper functions to override the generic versions if there's arch specific handling in its ioremap_prot(), ioremap() or iounmap(). This change will simplify implementation by removing duplicated code with generic_ioremap_prot() and generic_iounmap(), and has the equivalent functioality as before. For openrisc, the current ioremap() and iounmap() are the same as generic version. After taking GENERIC_IOREMAP way, the old ioremap() and iounmap() can be completely removed. mm: Rename arch pte_mkwrite()'s to pte_mkwrite_novma()
The x86 Shadow stack feature includes a new type of memory called shadow stack. This shadow stack memory has some unusual properties, which requires some core mm changes to function properly. One of these unusual properties is that shadow stack memory is writable, but only in limited ways. These limits are applied via a specific PTE bit combination. Nevertheless, the memory is writable, and core mm code will need to apply the writable permissions in the typical paths that call pte_mkwrite(). The goal is to make pte_mkwrite() take a VMA, so that the x86 implementation of it can know whether to create regular writable or shadow stack mappings. But there are a couple of challenges to this. Modifying the signatures of each arch pte_mkwrite() implementation would be error prone because some are generated with macros and would need to be re-implemented. Also, some pte_mkwrite() callers operate on kernel memory without a VMA. So this can be done in a three step process. First pte_mkwrite() can be renamed to pte_mkwrite_novma() in each arch, with a generic pte_mkwrite() added that just calls pte_mkwrite_novma(). Next callers without a VMA can be moved to pte_mkwrite_novma(). And lastly, pte_mkwrite() and all callers can be changed to take/pass a VMA. Start the process by renaming pte_mkwrite() to pte_mkwrite_novma() and adding the pte_mkwrite() wrapper in linux/pgtable.h. Apply the same pattern for pmd_mkwrite(). Since not all archs have a pmd_mkwrite_novma(), create a new arch config HAS_HUGE_PAGE that can be used to tell if pmd_mkwrite() should be defined. Otherwise in the !HAS_HUGE_PAGE cases the compiler would not be able to find pmd_mkwrite_novma(). No functional change. openrisc: Union fpcsr and oldmask in sigcontext to unbreak userspace ABI
With commit 27267655c531 ("openrisc: Support floating point user api") I
added an entry to the struct sigcontext which caused an unwanted change
to the userspace ABI.
To fix this we use the previously unused oldmask field space for the
floating point fpcsr state. We do this with a union to restore the ABI
back to the pre kernel v6.4 ABI and keep API compatibility.
This does mean if there is some code somewhere that is setting oldmask
in an OpenRISC specific userspace sighandler it would end up setting the
floating point register status, but I think it's unlikely as oldmask was
never functional before.
